INTRODUCTION Snow fell on Saturday at Kaprun and also at the Stubai glacier in Austria.
AUSTRIA Snow fell on the glacier at Kaprun (76cm) and also on the Stubai glacier (20cm) on Saturday. The most was received at Kaprun which reported 20cm of new snow while the Stubai glacier received 10cm.Despite the new snow the cover at Kaprun remains wet to heavy and the open area has been reduced to 1km. The Stubai glacier has been closed for a few weeks now due to a lack of snow and Saturdays snow was not sufficient to change the situation.It is going to be mainly sunny across Austria this week apart from on Wednesday when rain is expected.
FRANCE Snow fell on Friday at both Les Deux Alpes (80cm) and Tignes (40cm). The new snow has now packed down and typical conditions for the time of year have returned. Conditions are firm early in the morning but soon soften so it is best to get up early. Sunny weather is going to dominate this week Val d'Isere is now closed for the summer ski season.
SWITZERLAND A very light dusting of snow fell on Sunday at Saas Fee (182cm) and Zermatt (100cm). The snow has not improved conditions at either resort but the temperatures have fallen which has caused the bases to firm up. Sunny skies are now dominating at both resorts on Monday which will cause the pistes to soften by midday.
ITALY 10cm of snow fell on Friday on the glacier at Val Senales (40cm). This freshened up the pistes in time for the weekend and on Monday the three Grawand pistes have a good cover of packed snow.At Cervinia (110cm) it is going to be bright and sunny all week. The cover is firm in the morning but soon softens as the day progresses.The Presena glacier is closed for summer skiing due insufficient snow.
NORTH AMERICA The summer ski season has finished on the Blackcomb glacier at Whistler, Canada and skiing will resume on the glacier on the 27th November.It is going to be a mainly cloudy week at Timberline (170cm), USA. The only sunny spells will be seen on Tuesday and then rainy weather is expected again on Wednesday. It will also be windy on Wednesday which could affect lift operations.
AUSTRALIA Snow continued to fall across all bar one of the resorts in Australia over the weekend Thredbo (61/174cm) was the only resort to miss out on the snow but it is expected towards the end of Monday. The snow cannons were up and running on Sunday night and Supertrail, High Noon, Friday Flat and Sundowner have a cover of fresh manmade snow. The busy trails have become hard packed so watch your speed in these areas Ben Lomond (15/30cm) has reopened now that the winds have subsided but they are expected to pick up again on Tuesday which may affect the operations. The best snow is to be found on the backside of the mountain Mount Baw Baw (70/90cm) has an excellent cover of fresh snow in the open areas and the same can be said for Falls Creek (139/156cm) At Mount Baw Baw it is best to head to the trees off Maltese Cross if you are looking for stashes of powder. Falls Creek will continue to get better and better as snow is expected on a daily basis.
NEW ZEALAND Huge snowfalls have been recorded on both the north and south islands of New Zealand over the weekend.On the north island heavy snow fell over the weekend at Turoa (380/380cm) and Whakapapa (333/333cm). Turoa has had so much snow in the last few days that the measuring stick has been buried and needs to be extended before an accurate reading can be given. At Whakapapa most of the upper mountain in closed on Monday due to the high avalanche risk but on the lower mountain there is still plenty of powder to be enjoyed.On the south island Treble Cone (78/105) has received 45cm of snow since last Wednesday and they are now reporting excellent conditions across the whole mountain. The groomed trails are looking immaculate and have something for all abilities.Recent snowfalls at The Remarkables (90/130cm) mean that the mountain is also in great shape. Snow on Sunday night caused the Shadow Basin to fill in and excellent powder conditions can be found both on and off the trails there Rainbow (200/220cm) is closed on Monday due to the high avalanche risk in the area following 100cm of snow in the last three days. Mount Dobson (150/180cm) is also closed on Monday due to high winds.
CHILE It has been a weekend of heavy snow at many of the Chilean resorts that the Ski Club report on.The most fell on Saturday at La Parva (370/550cm) which received 1 metre on Saturday. Amazing champagne powder can now be found from top to bottom at the resort and conditions will remain for much of the week as more snow and low temperatures are forecast Chapa Verde (130/200cm) received slightly less snow with 90cm reported on Saturday. The resort is closed on Monday due to high winds but once the resort reopens excellent conditions will be available from top to bottom.The road from Santiago to Portillo (295/350cm) is closed on Monday due to the high volume of snow that fell over the weekend.
ARGENTINA 30cm of snow was reported on Saturday at Chapelco (43/225cm) and powder can still be enjoyed on Monday from top to bottom both on and off the pistes. Light snowfalls are expected on a daily base at the resort which will top up the conditions providing a great week of skiing.Snow also fell at the end of last week at Cerro Catedral (20/195cm) and the piste depths have increased slightly. Snow is expected this week so improved conditions are on the way.Good on-piste conditions are available at Las Lenas (66/170cm). The snow of last week has packed down and pockets of powder can be found in the backcountry.
