Mount Cheeseman summary

Mount Cheeseman is the second closest ski area to Christchurch. The ski field is a sunny east to southeast basin with open, rolling terrain. With great beginner and intermediate slopes, Mount Cheeseman is perfect for learners and families. Two T Bars give easy access to well groomed gentle terrain and the Learners Tow is located right beside the main lodge. Mount Cockayne offers great off-piste conditions and the face holds snow well. If you are keen on a taste of back country, it is little effort to drop into Tarn Basin to get some fresh lines. You must check in with ski patrol if you intend on heading out of bounds, as Tarn Basin is not patrolled. The grooming staff also make an awesome pipe and series of jumps in their terrain park; check it out. You can choose to stay up on the mountain in Snowline Lodge or Alternatively Forest Lodge, which is nestled in the Beech Forest and is an easy 5 minute drive in from SH 73.

Visitor Reviews of Mount Cheeseman

Ngareta from NEW ZEALAND writes:

My family and I have skied and stayed at Cheeseman since 1986. We have had some fantastic times up there and made some wonderful friends. It is really great to be able to stay right on the skifield. Choosing to ski or rest as you wish. I learnt to ski on a ski week where the lessons from the "Swiss Ski Instructors" made everthing so easy. If you join a ski week the comradary is great and with skiing with the people from your lessons in the afternoon each day you find you get so much more practise in than skiing with people too far above your level. But it doesn't matter if you just go for the day or the weekend, you'll have fun. Over the years we have noticed huge changes groomers, electricity, hot food, drinks and ski hire are all on the mountain now. With the opening of the wonderful new day lodge this 2005 season everything is so much more convenient and even incorperates a lecture room.
