Schladming summary

Schladming, in Austria (in the Steiermark region), is a large resort with 25 lifts (8 chair lifts, 15 surface lifts) that offers skiers an incredible 1159 metres (3802 feet) of vertical descent. It is part of the Skiverbund Amade area which includes Reiteralm, Amade, Hochkönig, Großarl and Gastein. Schladming has 25 pistes with a total length of 115 kilometers (72 miles). Schladming is best suited to intermediate skiers and snowboarders with some terrain for beginners but little of interest for advanced skiers. There are 250 kilometers (156 miles) of cross country ski trails at Schladming. For snowboarders, there is a terrain park and 3 half pipes. All of the pistes at Schladming are covered by snow-making. The closest airport is at Salzburg and the transfer time is only 1 hours. The nearest train station is in Schladming. There is accommodation located close to the pistes but we would welcome additional information about any hotels or chalets in Schladming.

I'm a Brit and have been living in Schladming for over 6 years and there must be a positive reason for this. As mentioned by many, it looks nice, it is not overrun with people, the mountain huts are affordable, the bars in the town have humane prices. Snow is damn good and to tell you the truth I'm not sure why people head to France, must be the expensive baguettes and busy lift systems.

Just to point out though, Rauris is nowhere near Schladming. And there are kids ski schools on the Planai and Hochwurzen.

If you want backcountry, it is here at Schladming but you have to find it. We do have secrets you know. And on sunny days you can try your freeride skills on the Dachstein glacier if you know what you are doing.

At Schladming we also now have a good park on the Planai, freestyle snowboard school and a damn good shop: Blue Tomato.
