Zermatt summary

Zermatt, under the shadow of the Matterhorn, is one of Europe's best ski areas. Linked to Cervinia, just over the border in Italy, it offers over 250km of pistes. Despite 71 lifts, there is often a bit of a queue to get up the mountain in the morning. Once there you will be spoiled for choice whatever your ability. Throw in a world class terrain park and pipe and you realize this is truly a top resort. Off the piste, Zermatt is traditional, slightly snobby and expensive. Stay in one of the many chalets on the outskirts to save cash for the excellent restaurants in town. Nightlife is also very good.

Zermatt offers the highest skiing in Europe, huge verticals, an enormous number of high quality mountain restaurants and some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world. New lift systems put in place over the past three seasons have greatly improved previous bottle necks, whilst the town has retained much of its traditional chocolate box charm.
Off piste is less easily accessible in comparison to Val D'Isere, but those in the know rate it just as highly. Zermatt does not seem to suffer as much from congestion when compared to peak Easter and half term crowds in resorts of an equivalent standing in France and it is still possible to find deserted pistes at most times of the year. Its drawbacks include cost: The most expensive lift pass in Europe, a scarcity of budget accommodation and three mountain areas that are still not particularly well connected. Having said all that, it remains for many the finest ski resort in the world and I would have to say I agree.
